Fifth Centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the World: The Magellan-Elcano Expedition Series: Economy, Business and Tourism on Radio 3 Recording Date: March 8, 2018 In February 2018, the executive committee was formed to commemorate the fifth centenary of the first circumnavigation of the world, which Ferdinand Magellan began in 1519 and, after his death, Juan Sebastián Elcano completed in 1522. The commemorative events officially began on March 20, 2018, with the international congress "Primus Circumdedisti Me. Keys to the First Globalization," directed by Carlos Martínez Shaw, Professor of Modern History at the UNED (National University of Distance Education) and member of the Royal Academy of History. The congress, in which experts from around the world will participate, will be held in Valladolid, the city where, on March 22, 1518, King Charles I signed the treaty with Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan's Capitulations, in which he was granted the title of captain of this fleet of five ships, and governor of the lands to be discovered.
