Does worship simply mean ringing a bell, lighting a lamp, offering flowers, and reciting a few mantras? Or is worship something deeper than that? I believe that the most important requirement for worship is the mind, not the means. If there is no devotion, love, compassion, and gratitude in the heart, even worship materials worth millions of rupees cannot bring us closer to God. But when the importance of means in worship becomes excessive, then gradually a person begins to believe that simply performing a few rituals has fulfilled his religious duty. This is where the problem begins. Such worship often leads us away from God, not toward Him. Imagine a person running at full speed in the opposite direction of his goal. The more he runs, the further he gets from his destination. This is exactly the situation of a person who is engrossed in rituals and has forgotten truth, kindness, honesty, and love in life. You may have also seen people who pray for long periods in the morning, but as soon as they reach the shop, they start lying, adulterating goods, and cheating. An officer or policeman may go to a temple and pray, but if they then oppress the poor, take bribes, and commit injustice, can their worship truly be called worship? Probably not. Because they think worship was a task they completed in the morning. But a person who knows that God is watching us every moment, that nothing is hidden from Him, will think a hundred times before committing any wrongdoing. True worship begins after leaving the temple. If our behavior doesn't change after worship, then understand that the body has performed the worship, not the mind. When we begin to consider superstition as religion, hypocrisy gradually arises in society. Then someone offers alcohol in the name of gods. Somewhere animal sacrifices are performed. Somewhere, people are intimidated in the name of tantra-mantra. Somewhere, women are dragged by their hair. Somewhere, they are beaten and abused. Somewhere, they are treated inappropriately. Somewhere, it is said that drinking water gargled by a baba will drive away the evil spirits. Somewhere, people are exploited mentally and financially in the name of exorcism. Think about it… If God is love, would He be pleased with such degrading acts? The biggest problem with superstition is that it robs a person of their conscience. And when conscience is lost, a person has countless arguments to justify their delusions. Then, after a few years, the same person says, "I prayed a lot, but found nothing." And gradually, disillusioned with religion, they become atheists. The problem wasn't with worship. The problem was with a misunderstanding of worship. What is a true devotee like? He is filled with love. He is filled with compassion. He is grateful. He possesses humility. His behavior brings joy and peace to people's lives. He does not need to repeatedly demonstrate his devotion. His life itself becomes his worship. Such a person is truly loved by God. Now, an important point. These days, many people say, "Only our path is right; all others are wrong." Such thinking is also not appropriate. If a saint, guru, or organization, without hypocrisy, without fear, without superstition, is leading people toward truth, love, discipline, virtue, and God, then they should be respected. It may be that their rules are different from ours. Their method of worship is different. Their traditions are different. This is natural. The rules may be different, but the objective should be the same—to elevate human character. Look… Is the ego of their followers decreasing? Are they abstaining from addictions? Is discipline emerging in their lives? Are they becoming more compassionate, honest, and peaceful? If the answer is "yes," then we should avoid opposing them. If you must oppose hypocrisy, oppose it. Superstition. Exploitation. Pretense. Society does not benefit from meaningless debates. But if we stand together against hypocrisy and superstition, both religion and society will survive. In conclusion, I would like to say this: The purpose of worship is not to please God, but to elevate oneself. The day our worship changes our behavior, our love grows, our courage to speak the truth grows, our compassion for others awakens, and our pride begins to fade— Consider that our worship has been successful from that day.
