The history of the Jewish people has traditionally been known through the biblical narrative. But the Bible is not a history book, but a book of faith. While it is true that this religious message was transmitted within a correct geographical and historical context that we must be able to interpret, historians and archaeologists have long sought to reconstruct the history of the Jewish people, refining and enriching the biblical account. We can place the origin of the Hebrew people (not yet Jewish) at the turn of the 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE, as part of the Semitic peoples who at that time migrated, once again, from the interior of the Arabian Desert towards the Tigris and Euphrates valleys in the East and towards the Orontes and Jordan valleys in the West.
