This video shows how to turn a Windows 10 PC into an ultra-wideband receiver by installing a shortwave-compatible USB tuner and free software. I received a comment in a previous software-defined radio video asking if it would be nice to be able to listen to shortwave (HF) signals, which piqued my interest, so I purchased it. Software-defined radio is still dominated by English and technical jargon, so I've tried to explain it as simply as possible. The RTL-SDR.COM has very little noise and I think its reception performance is excellent. Since HDSDR does not have a plug-in function, it is not possible to add the channel scanning function available with SDR sharp. Since channel scanning is required for airband reception, we recommend switching your software to SDR sharp. Also, HDSDR seems to have a bug that prevents it from initializing properly at startup, so it seems best to use it in conjunction with SDR sharp. A beta version has also been released, so it's worth trying out as needed. I was having trouble with an issue where I couldn't receive signals after starting HDSDR after changing tuner models, but I was able to find a workaround, which I've included at the end of the video. When using the Zadig USB driver, be extremely careful not to select the wrong driver and port. It seems that accidentally installing the tuner driver into a USB port used by a keyboard or mouse can make recovery difficult.
