The Soviet Union After Stalin - Footage of Life in 1950s USSR (1959)
On 25 February 1959, ITN broadcast "Visit to Moscow", a special 20-minute report presented by Robin Day on life in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union. The report was aired four days into a ten-day visit to the USSR by British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who was being hosted by Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev. Nearly six years after the death of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union was going through a process of "de-Stalinization", the steady and limited liberalisation of Soviet society. While the power of the Communist Party remained absolute, restrictions on freedom of expression became relatively relaxed. Robin Day explored Soviet-style consumerism in the city's famous GUM shopping centre. And with the help of a Moscow student, Day sought to understand Soviet perceptions of Britain as well as the differences between the British and Soviet political systems. #Stalin #Khrushchev #JosephStalin #NikitaKhrushchev #DeStalinization #USSR #SovietUnion #Soviet #Soviets #SovietWave #HaroldMacmillan #History #ColdWar #Communism #1950s #1959 #Communist #Communists #Moscow #RedSquare #DeathOfStalin To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/search/...
