Szczecin (pronounced Shcheh-cheen) is a port city in northwestern Poland, near the German border, and the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It’s not your typical Polish city—it stands out thanks to its rich maritime history, bold architecture, and unusual urban layout inspired by Paris. Szczecin sits on the Oder River, just a few dozen kilometers from the Baltic Sea, which has made it one of the country’s key shipping and shipbuilding hubs. Historically, the city has seen a mix of influences—Polish, German, Swedish, and Prussian—which is reflected in everything from its architecture to local cuisine. Before 1945, it was known as Stettin and was part of Germany. After WWII, it became part of Poland and was repopulated with Poles from other parts of the country, especially from the east.
