For this old townscape walk, we'll be walking through the Shimotsui Townscape Preservation District, a historic port town facing the Seto Inland Sea. Shimotsui is a very historic port town facing the Seto Inland Sea, and appears in records from the Nara and Heian periods. At the beginning of the Edo period, Shimotsui Castle was built on the mountains behind the Bizen domain to protect it from the sea. However, the castle was abandoned due to the One Castle per Province Order, but stone walls and other features that testify to its past remain and are designated as a historic site by Okayama Prefecture. It was from the mid-Edo period onwards that Shimotsui flourished as a full-fledged port town, bustling with ships sailing on inland sea routes and Kitamae-bune (northern shipping) ships. It was also a bustling crossing point for people travelling to Shikoku and visiting Konpira Shrine. Even today, merchant houses and herring warehouses from that time remain, and the atmosphere of a fishing town remains well. These buildings feature real tile roofing, plaster walls or namako walls, and windows with cage windows or lattice windows, preserving their historic landscape.
