Title: DROP SIZE Description: This video aims to: 1. Explain why it is important to know the drop size for a phytosanitary treatment. 2. Determine the recommended drop size for a treatment. Ortí García, E. (2015). DROP SIZE. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/49161 Automatic description: In this video, the speaker explains the importance of knowing the drop size for phytosanitary treatments and determines the recommended size according to the type of treatment. Three main issues are addressed: the importance of drop size, the recommended size, and the standards for its characterization. It is emphasized that drop size affects the percentage of plant coverage and the probability of treatment success. Smaller droplets increase coverage, but they also increase drift, which is the loss of product due to wind action. Therefore, it is crucial to find a balance that maximizes effectiveness and minimizes drift. According to the expert, the recommended droplet size varies depending on the type of product (fungicide, insecticide, etc.) and its mode of action (contact or systemic). For contact applications, smaller and more numerous droplets are suggested, while for systemic treatments, larger and fewer droplets are recommended, thus reducing the risk of drift. The concept of "volumetric mean diameter" is introduced to define droplet size, indicating the diameter at which fifty percent of the applied volume is contained in smaller droplets and the remainder in larger droplets. Finally, the ISO 5725 standard is mentioned, which classifies spraying into six categories based on the volumetric mean diameter, simplifying nozzle selection and equipment adjustment. The video concludes by highlighting how knowledge of droplet size impacts the effectiveness of phytosanitary applications and the importance of proper characterization for equipment selection.
