Steady Rest Making Use Of the Swing - Episode 184
I've watched several videos on making a Steady Rest, took these and modified them slightly to make better use of the swing of the lathe. Most Steady Rests consist of a closed ring that is fixed to the lathe bed. This means you lose a good portion of the available space on the lathe. By splitting the ring so it goes down the sides of the lathe bed I've gained 2-3 Inches of extra space. An assembly still has to sit on the lathe bed but this is far smaller than doing it in what seems the current conventional way. I could still modify the arms a little more to gain even more space, but this works well for me at the current size and wouldn't require a full rebuild to do this.
