Katara, Aang, and Sokka discover Haru, a young earthbender hiding his ability from the Fire Nation who have banned all earthbending in the area. When Katara encourages him to use his bending to save a trapped miner, Fire Nation soldiers arrest him and take him to a prison rig in the middle of the ocean. Katara refuses to leave him there. Not because she knows him well. Because she feels responsible. And because watching someone lose their freedom for doing something good is not something she can walk away from. She gets herself captured on purpose and taken to the rig. What she finds there is worse than a prison. It is a place where hope has been completely extinguished. Earthbenders who have given up.
