IPSC Training Tips #1 - Accuracy and 2 Drills
Don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE! This is the first of a series of IPSC Training Tips videos that I plan on posting. I hope this video provides you with some good tips or at least food for thought when it comes to planning your training sessions. Accuracy is something that many IPSC shooters forget about as they focus more on speed. The faster you shoot, the less accurate you tend to become. To gain speed, you have to give something up and what you give up is accuracy. The more accurate of a shooter you are, the more accuracy you can afford to give up to gain speed. Start all your training sessions on the range with some accuracy shooting. I shoot a minimum 4 magazines as part of my accuracy shooting and I take my time as I want to get the tightest group possible at all distances. My indoor range limits me to 20yds but when I shoot outdoors, my far target is at 25yds. Once I am finished shooting my groups, I tend to do two drills that encompass accuracy as part of the drill's training objectives. I keep the drills simple as I do with training stage setups. Why? So that I don't feel that they are too much work to setup. If your drill or stage setup is too complicated, chances are that you won't always set them up. Therefore, keep them simple. I usually use one static drill and one drill that requires movements. Everyone wants to shoot fast. Well, shooting too fast and beyond your skills to remain accurate will not help you win matches or for that matter improve your shooting over time. Concentrate on becoming an accurate shooter before you start working on speed. If you trigger too fast and you aren't a very accurate shooter to begin with, expect a lot of Charlies, Deltas, misses and likely too many hits on No Shoot Targets. Remember that the Rule of Thumb is to trigger fast on close in targets and slow down your triggering speed as the target distances increase. Only the most accurate shooters can double tap very fast on distant targets and still make good hits, all Alphas. Speed will come with time and experience. As a new shooter or not so new, your goal should be to become as accurate a shooter as possible in your first year of shooting. Let the fast guys, who aren't that accurate, make all the mistakes / bad hits. You will be surprised at how well you can do at a match shooting all Alphas and have reasonable stage times. Remember to incorporate some accuracy shooting in all your range sessions. Train well and have fun.
