What I mean by core BECMI undead is those appearing in the boxed sets and the Rules Cyclopedia, so not those additional undead that appeared in modules or creature catalogues. That said, I will give these an honourable mention at the end. Whilst taking a look at their powers and what makes them so fearful in the BECMI game, I narrow my focus towards several particular groupings of what I refer to as greater undead that you may be unfamiliar with but are well worth discussing to remember they existed. Finally, I focus on a form of undead control that I understand is unique to the BECMI system; that is the system of undead lieges and pawns, and how this worked in practice, and ask why we haven’t seen more of this in modern systems.
