This is a question many tourists ask themselves as they stroll among the crooked tenement houses and picturesque canals. In this video, we tell how history, engineering, and practical decisions have shaped one of Europe's most distinctive cities. Amsterdam is a city that grew out of mud—literally. Situated below sea level, it was built on thousands of wooden piles driven into the muddy ground. In the 17th century, during the so-called Golden Age, it became a center of trade and finance. Thousands of merchants moved here from Antwerp, sparking rapid development. The lack of space led the city to plan on a grand scale—thus creating the famous Grachtengordel, or "ring of canals," now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Why are Amsterdam's houses so narrow and tall? It's a result of space constraints and a tax based on the width of their facades. Their characteristic forward lean and roof hooks had a very practical purpose – they made it easier to pull furniture and goods from boats straight into the houses. The city also grapples with the consequences of the wetlands. Over the years, some houses have begun to subside, tilt, and crack – a prime example of which are the famous "dancing houses" on the Damrak. To protect Amsterdam from water, a system of dams, embankments, canals, and pumps has been developed over the centuries to protect it. Today, modern technologies have taken over the role of windmills, but the goal remains the same – keeping the city dry. In the second half of the 20th century, Amsterdam underwent another metamorphosis. From a city dominated by cars, it became the world capital of cycling. Thanks to public pressure, fuel crises, and bold urban planning decisions, bicycle infrastructure was introduced, which today serves as a model for other cities. Amsterdam is also a space of compromise – between freedom and responsibility. The red light district and so-called coffee shops operate legally thanks to a policy of "pragmatic tolerance," although their future is increasingly debated. It is also distinguished by the lack of high-rise buildings in the city center. The combination of unstable ground and conservation protection has allowed Amsterdam's skyline to remain low and consistent – with tenement roofs and church spires instead of glass skyscrapers. This film is not only a history of the city but also a story about how engineering, commerce, climate, and people combined to create a place that still fascinates visitors from around the world. 📍 If you want to better plan your trip to Amsterdam, check out our guide to the most interesting attractions – you'll find the link in the description. 📌 Subscribe to the Poznaje Kraje channel to never miss another video from around the world. xxx Sources of the Creative Commons licensed photos and videos used in our film: By bertknot - https://www.flickr.com/photos/bertkno..., CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index...
