Can Canada Save Indigenous Languages from Extinction? | The Agenda

In the last five years, studies have shown a greater than 4 per cent decline in the number of Indigenous people able to hold a conversation in their own languages. Many of the 70 Indigenous languages found in Canada are under threat, in favour of the country's official English and French languages. We welcome Ryan DeCaire, associate professor at the University of Toronto's Centre for Indigenous Studies and Department of Linguistics, and a Mohawk language teacher, to help us better understand what's been lost, and to discuss innovative ideas for revival.
