Christian Borle, the best thing in this production, wielded his brand of magic to anchor the show but you have to wait till Act 2. Umpa-lumpas were cute and fun. The spoiled golden-ticketed kids were entertaining and the scores serviceable. Negatives: Staging was embarrassing…no wow, just dull. Asking the audience to imagine a fantastical world doesn't work. We needed to be visually transported to Wonka world. When a very large square and bare stage appeared, I got hopefully...maybe a “Curious Incident of the Dog” type 3-D graphics was gonna happen. Nope, you literally had to exercise your "imagination," one of the main songs. Last note, we all thought the lead “Charlie” was miscast. The show is probably fine for a family night out. If it wasn’t for Oliver (he thought it was just ok), I would have passed on this. * *Jake Ryan Flynn (Charlie) was blocked by a very tall man so I chose not to include his curtain. Sorry Jake.
