Anand corners Carlsen’s knight
Featured in this analysis is the game between Vishy Anand and Magnus Carlsen from the 2007 Linares Tournament. The opening is a Ruy Lopez, Closed with Carlsen selecting the Keres variation. Anand’s immediate d5 space grab ultimately gives his pieces better flexibility. Anand first threatens to infiltrate on the queenside, which compels Carlsen to demote his knight, and then quickly shifts the attention to the kingside where Carlsen’s pieces are absent for defense. Anand’s recapture on g5 set the stage for a beautiful tactical shot that essentially morphed a dormant bishop into a star piece.
