Quetico/BWCA: Basswood Fish Frenzy

Quetico/BWCA: Basswood Base Camp What happens when three senior paddlers slow down and spend time exploring one of the most beautiful corners of Quetico and the Boundary Waters? This isn't just another fishing trip. It's a story about wilderness, friendship, great food, unforgettable campsites, wildlife, and the simple joy of living outdoors. With the temporary decline in travel across the border lakes, I took the opportunity to base camp on North Bay of Basswood Lake—waters I normally paddle through on my way to Quetico's interior. I spent a week alone on Sunday and Basswood, and then moved farther west on Basswood to a rendezvous site with two experienced outdoorsmen who wanted to experience the magic of spring smallmouth fishing in canoe country. Along the way you'll discover: • Beautiful Quetico and BWCA scenery • Trophy smallmouth bass fishing • Wildlife encounters and wilderness photography • The Sea of Basswood and its remarkable spawning habitat • Prairie Portage and the beginning of another paddling season as the ranger flies in • Chef Tom's incredible backcountry cooking • Ray's unforgettable stories and sense of humor • The health benefits of sunlight, forest bathing, and grounding • Campsite conduct and the camaraderie that make wilderness travel so rewarding Whether you're planning your first canoe trip or you've been paddling these waters for decades, I hope this adventure reminds you why we keep coming back. Thanks for joining us on another adventure! Mark Canoe, Explore, Discover
