In 2014, José Ivo Sartori was elected with 3.8 million votes (more than 60% of the votes from Rio Grande do Sul); He is the 38th governor of Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the Republic; Sartori was born in the town of Capela de São Valentim, in Farroupilha, in the Serra region, on February 25, 1948; The eldest of 6 siblings, he grew up working in the fields, alongside his father, Antônio Sílvio Sartori, who earned a living as a tire repairman, and his mother, Elza Josefina Dengo Sartori, a homemaker. His grandparents and two uncles also lived in the family home; From an early age, Sartori was interested in collective causes, which led him to be a leader of student movements and to fight against the military dictatorship in the 1960s; At age 13, he began studying in Antônio Prado, was president of the Student Union, and was active in the Catholic Student Youth (JEC) movement; At age 18, with his secondary education completed, in 1966, he entered a seminary in Caxias do Sul, participated in the creation of the Student Union, and took political positions against the dictatorship. He spent 1969 studying Philosophy at the Major Seminary of Viamão and then returned to Caxias, where he completed his studies at the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS); With a degree in Philosophy, he was a university professor of this discipline, in addition to teaching Moral and Civic History and Brazilian Social and Political Organization; It was at the university that he met Maria Helena Sartori (now a state deputy), whom he married and with whom he had two children – Marcos and Carolina; He and Maria Helena were always politically active in academia, where they led resistance movements against the military regime. - In 2002, Sartori was elected federal deputy and, in 2004, won the election for mayor of Caxias do Sul; In 2008, he was re-elected; He has also served as state vice-president of the PMDB and president of the Legislative Assembly, in 1998, when he assumed the state government on two occasions. His administration as governor has three strong pillars: 1.
