mode lydien F & Fmaj7

Continuing our exploration of the major diatonic scale: the Lydian mode. Staying in the key of C major, the fourth degree leads us to Fmaj7 (F major 7): F – G – A – B – C – D – E What makes the Lydian mode immediately recognizable is its augmented fourth (#11): here, B (B). It is this note that transforms a simple major chord into a more open, suspended, and luminous sound. On Fmaj7, we can use: • The Fmaj7 arpeggio → F – A – C – E → stability, harmonic definition. • The 9 (G) → adds space. • The #11 (B) → the signature sound of the Lydian, a feeling of elevation. • The 13 (D) → adds an even more ethereal quality. The result: Fmaj7(#11) The Lydian mode is often used to: → create cinematic atmospheres → open a section without dominant tension → enrich a static harmony → improvise over modern major chords → provide a sense of movement without immediate resolution Exercise: Play a pedal F, then alternate between classical F major and F Lydian… listen to how the natural B (#11) completely changes the perception. The Lydian mode doesn't push towards something else. It gives the impression that the harmony is breathing. @musictheory @bassplayer @basslesson @improvisation @jazzbass @modalmusic @musiceducation @harmony @lydian #ModeLydien #Fmaj7 #Diatonique #Bass #Improvisation #Jazz #Fusion #MusicTheory #ModalPlaying #BassEducation English 🇬🇧 Continuing our exploration of the major diatonic scale: the Lydian mode. Staying in the key of C major, the fourth degree gives us Fmaj7: F – G – A – B – C – D – E The defining characteristic of Lydian is its raised fourth (#11): here the note B. That single note changes the atmosphere completely and gives the mode its floating, spacious and luminous quality. Over Fmaj7, we can explore: • Fmaj7 arpeggio → F – A – C – E → harmonic foundation • 9th (G) → openness and extension • #11 (B) → the true Lydian color • 13th (D) → additional air and movement Resulting color: Fmaj7(#11) Typical uses of the Lydian mode: → cinematic atmospheres → suspended harmonic landscapes → modern major chord improvisation → modal composition → creating motion without traditional resolution Practical idea: Play a sustained F drone and alternate between regular F major and F Lydian… notice how the natural B (#11) completely transforms the emotional perception. Lydian does not create urgency. It creates expansion. @musictheory @bassplayer @basslesson @jazzbass @improvisation @modalmusic @fusionmusic @musiceducation @lydian #LydianMode #Fmaj7 #MusicTheory #Bass #Jazz #Improvisation #ModalHarmony #Fusion #BassEducation
