The number of construction workers earning over 10 million yen annually is rapidly increasing. In the construction industry, once known for its harsh working conditions, we followed a 27-year-old craftsman who achieved high income at a young age. ■Becoming a Scaffolding Professional at 27 His movements, stepping onto 5-centimeter diameter pipes like a jungle gym, are reminiscent of a ninja. He moves with efficient, effortless movements. We asked Mr. Ito (27) about his current annual income. "Around 10 million yen. I want to earn as much as I can." Mr. Ito, originally from Akita Prefecture, became a scaffolder after graduating from junior high school. Now, he works as a self-employed individual, taking on jobs from scaffolding companies. "I think we've already assembled four more scaffolding planks." On this particular day, the site was assembling scaffolding for a house undergoing renovation. Under Mr. Ito's direction, two people assembled 5-kilogram scaffolding planks and other materials to surround the two-story wooden house. Four hours later… "(Q. Is that all?) (That's all.) That's it." Mr. Ito is a scaffolding professional who can handle various types of projects, from general residential buildings to large-scale renovations of apartment buildings. The more projects he completes, the higher his income. "It's a high-risk job because you earn as much as you work, but the rewards are great when they're good. So, as long as I'm physically able, I think I'm fine with my current situation." Mr. Ito's income structure is approximately 40,000 yen per assembly and approximately 35,000 yen per dismantling. If he completes both assembly and dismantling in one day, he earns 75,000 yen, leaving him with 55,000 yen after expenses. ■ "No Compromise" - Unwavering Trust His encounter with scaffolding work began when he was 16 years old, after graduating from junior high school. He got a job at a company in his hometown of Akita. "(My annual income was) around 2 million yen, maybe a little less. Because it was so low, I worked two jobs, including a night shift at a restaurant." He worked as a full-time employee for three years. He got married at 20, and his annual income was 3.3 million yen. Thinking he needed to earn more to support his children, he moved to Tokyo at 21. "My salary back home wasn't enough, so I thought I'd try a job with a higher daily wage, introduced by a friend." "(Q. What was your daily wage when you moved to Tokyo?) About 20,000 yen a day. The difference was about double." He became a self-employed craftsman, and his annual income rose to 6 million yen. At 23, he was promoted to foreman, managing sites, and his annual income increased to 8 million yen. After that, along with his skills, he also developed the ability to lead a team, and his annual income finally… "On good days, my monthly income exceeds 1 million yen. My annual income is around 10 million yen. I believe that if I do my work carefully, I'll get more work. So I do my work carefully and without compromise." Yuki Ochiai, president of Relief, the scaffolding company that commissions work from Mr. Ito, says this: "We receive feedback from residents saying that he greets them properly and with a smile. When our sales team secures a new project, they have absolute confidence that Ito-kun will handle it well from the start." ■ "Committed to On-Site Work" - Wife Satisfied Currently, Ito-san's motivation for working comes from his 6-year-old eldest daughter, El-chan, and his 3-year-old eldest son, Etoraku-kun. "Before I leave for work, my whole family comes to the front door and tells me to do my best, so I work hard for that." That day, he returned to his home in Tokyo at 5 PM. As Dad was sitting on the sofa... "(Q. You're very popular, aren't you?) I might be a little popular today." Regarding their current life, his wife, Marin (27), said: "I'm satisfied." Ito-san says he wants to continue to focus on on-site work. "I want to earn as much as I can, if I can. My immediate goal is 11 million yen."
