Some songs age quietly. Others become uncomfortably relevant. This is the most political song I’ve written, and today it feels more urgent than when it was first created. It began as a reflection on soldiers fighting for religious causes that conflict with their own humanity. Beneath that, it’s a broader metaphor for doing the wrong things for the “right” reasons — and the stories we tell ourselves to justify them. I’ve always been fascinated by religious fundamentalism, and by how actions can directly contradict the beliefs people claim to follow.
