Kumkapı (meaning 'sand gate' in Turkish) is a quarter in Fatih district of Istanbul. It is located along the northern shore of Marmara Sea. Up to recent times, Kumkapı is the center of the Armenian community of the city, boasting a school and several churches. It is also where the seat of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople is located. The quarter is famous for its many fish restaurants; therefore attracting many local and foreign tourists round the year. Kumkapı, which was called Konto skalion, which means small pier in the Byzantine period, is a district where citizens of Armenian origin lived in recent times, and today there is an Armenian school, many Armenian churches and the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul. Kumkapi is especially famous for its fishermen, restaurants and taverns. Do not come back to Kumkapı without eating fish. Kumkapı is also home to beautiful taverns and restaurants where Istanbul's favorite and popular fasil nights are held.
