Tadeja Vulc - O SAPIENTIA | KGBL Chamber Choir
O SAPIENTIA for mixed choir (SATB div.) a cappella Text: Great ''O'' Antiphon Music by: Tadeja Vulc (1978) composed: 2016 Dedicated to Ambrož Čopi and KGBL Chamber Choir LIVE RECORDING: Video provided by Tolosa Choral Contest 49th Tolosa Choral Contest November 2–5 , 2017 Leidor Theatre in Tolosa (Basque Country, Spain). KGBL Chamber Choir Ambrož Čopi, conductor About the composer: Tadeja Vulc (b. 1978) is an active conductor and a composer. Her affinity for choral music aroused while studying composition at Academy of music in Ljubljana, and later in Vienna. Since then she wrote many compositions for different vocal groups and received several awards in Slovenia and abroad. Vulc’s music is very realistic, supporting the lyrics and expressing them with unconventional – but very suitable – principles (body-percussion, common speech, aleatorics). Being also a recreator, she often tries to combine movement and music on the stage – to tell the story even more efficiently. The composer on his work: “O eternal wisdom, which preceedest from the mouth of the Most High ... Come Thou to teach us the way of understanding!” Wisdom for me is one of the highest virtues a person can have. It is not dependent on the level of education, it can only be gained with life experience. Therefore, I view it with utmost respect. The piece was created almost instantly, due to the strength of its text. It is written in such a way that it has only one arc - it resembles our life itself like the inhale and exhale, the place where the piece is “born” and into which it returns in the end. As almost all my more important works, it is also based on one of the tones which are most important to me: D, A, and E. Because wisdom “settles” everything, it settles (part C) also the seemingly unregulated rhythm (part B), I wanted to show its “strength of regulation” with rhythm and the duality of it (and accents) between measures 41 and 46. The initial melody (resembling a Gregorian chant) develops from one tone; its evasiveness (wisdom cannot be achieved by everybody) is shown with echoes, its greatness with the glimmering coloration of individual tones (m-o-m).
