The ECOSOC President at the 52nd Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 52)

21/10/2024 – H.E. Mr. Bob Rae, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), delivered a pre-recorded video statement at the High-Level Opening Ceremony of the 52nd Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 52), marking its fiftieth anniversary. Ambassador Rae emphasized the urgent need to address the intersecting crises of food insecurity, displacement, and inequality, particularly their devastating impacts on vulnerable populations, including women, children, and Indigenous Peoples. He pointed out that one in eleven people globally experiences hunger, with the crisis exacerbated by conflicts, climate change, and economic downturns. The President outlined three key priorities for the ECOSOC: tackling the root causes of displacement that fuel global food insecurity, harnessing emerging technologies equitably to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and bridging financing gaps essential for achieving SDG 2—Zero Hunger—by 2030. He also noted that the recent ECOSOC/HLPF Ministerial Declaration offers a clear path forward, including transforming agrifood systems and leveraging science and technology to combat hunger.
