The Perils of Travel Through History
I am TV's Bald Explorer and I am looking at the difficulties encountered by the early travellers in this very short potted history. I am in Shropshire, on location mostly, in this episode, although my mini-series of British exploration tries to cover many part's of the UK. Getting around in the UK was a tricky thing until after the Turnpike Trusts arrived in the mid 17th Century to improve the state of the roads. The coaching era was supposed to be an effortless and elegant way to convey oneself across the land, but in actualy fact, it was terribly uncomfortable, dangerous and cumbersome.
