She sang traditional folk songs as well as the nirgun songs of Kabir, Bhavani Nath, Gorakhnath and other mystics, which she learned from her aunt Shabana’s satsangs. She belonged to the Dholi community of musicians and drummers, who derive their name from the dhol (drum), who traditionally performed for their patrons to make auspicious the start of any new project. Jamali Bai was always accompanied on the harmonium by her husband, Ramzan Khan, whom she considered her primary musical friend and guru. Jamali Bai passed away in July 2016. Organised by Lokayan, Bikaner and partnered with Rajasthan Police, this is a folk festival providing a space where folk musicians, artists, scholars, students and seekers can immerse themselves in the voices of Bhakti and Sufi saint-poets such as Kabir, Mira, Bulleh Shah, and many more, questioning and dissolving boundaries of caste, class, religion and identity. The five editions, in 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 were widely chronicled and appreciated.
