For almost 2,000 years, the Herculaneum scrolls were impossible to read. Burned and carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, these ancient Roman texts survived as fragile blackened lumps near Naples, Italy. Since their discovery in the 1750s, scholars tried to open them, but every physical attempt risked destroying the scrolls forever. Then AI changed the story. Through the Vesuvius Challenge, researchers used 3D X-ray scans and machine learning to detect hidden ink inside the sealed scrolls without opening them. By 2025, an entire Herculaneum scroll had been virtually unwrapped and read from beginning to end, revealing words buried since the Roman world vanished under volcanic ash.
