Hunting Big Timber Canadian Bucks

Big bucks in big woods with Harvest Lodge in northern Manitoba. All day sits during the rifle season coincide with the rut and this Canadian destination routinely produces some great deer. Hunting out of ladders stands or ground blinds along scrapes, rub lines and swamp edges. The first few days of our hunt was slow for deer activity. A slight dusting of overnight snow was accompanied by strong winds the first day. The second day was unseasonably warm where the snow quickly melted and there was little deer movement. Persistence quickly paid off however. During the middle of the third day, Chris shot a great Manitoba buck on a swamp edge that gross scored 164 inches. On the fourth day, Jason harvested a 140 inch dark horned buck on an intersection of trails also midday. What made this hunt so enjoyable was simply hunting sign and putting in all day sits over fresh sign. We were not using any trail camera information so the element of surprise and uncertainty definitely added to the suspense each day. These deer in these big woods also move a lot and migrate closer to agriculture as fall progresses into winter. You don’t know what deer you will see each day. What is also interesting is how these deer in this bush country often move more during the middle of the day than the last hour of the day.
