In this week’s food adventure, I took a trip to Wyandotte, Michigan, to check out a local Chinese spot called China Star. If you’re from the Metro Detroit area or nearby, you know how special it is to find a place that serves up those comforting, delicious Chinese-American classics that we all crave. China Star definitely didn’t disappoint! For this review, I had to try a few of their most popular dishes. I ordered the almond chicken combination, the General's chicken combination, along with a couple of soups to complete the meal—hot and sour soup and egg drop soup. Here’s what I thought: Almond Chicken Combination: Let’s start with the standout dish—this almond chicken was absolutely my favorite of the meal! If you're from the Metro Detroit area, you might already be familiar with this regional twist on almond chicken. For those who aren’t, imagine a perfectly fried chicken breast, coated with a light and crispy breading, smothered in a savory brown gravy and topped with sliced almonds. It’s a combination that you don’t see everywhere, but here in Metro Detroit, it’s a local favorite—and China Star does it right. The chicken was juicy, the gravy was rich, and the almonds added that extra texture that took it to the next level. A must-try if you ever find yourself at China Star. General's Chicken Combination: Next up was the General's chicken, which is always a crowd-pleaser. This version had a great balance of sweetness and heat, with tender pieces of chicken that were perfectly fried and tossed in a bold sauce. It wasn’t too spicy, but it had just enough kick to make things interesting. Paired with the fried rice and egg roll that came with the combination, this dish is definitely a solid option for anyone craving some sweet and spicy goodness. Hot and Sour Soup & Egg Drop Soup: I also wanted to explore the soup options, so I tried both the hot and sour soup and the egg drop soup. The hot and sour soup had a nice tangy flavor with a subtle heat that lingered in the background. It was packed with tofu, bamboo shoots, and other classic ingredients that made each spoonful hearty and satisfying. The egg drop soup, on the other hand, was silky and smooth, offering a more mild and comforting flavor. If you’re looking for something light yet flavorful to start your meal, both of these soups are great choices. Overall Experience: My experience at China Star was top-notch. The food was hot, fresh, and bursting with flavor. From the crispy almond chicken to the saucy General’s chicken, each dish delivered exactly what you’d want from a classic Chinese takeout spot. Whether you’re in the mood for something crispy and savory, or sweet and spicy, China Star has something to satisfy your craving. Should You Visit? If you’re ever in Wyandotte, Michigan, or if you’re looking to explore more hidden gems in Metro Detroit’s food scene, China Star should definitely be on your list. Their menu offers a wide variety of options, and judging from the dishes I tried, you really can’t go wrong. They offer all the staples you’d expect from a Chinese restaurant, but their execution sets them apart. As always, thank you so much for joining me for another episode of Detroit Food Review.
