Based on his magnificent essay "The Machination of the World" (Companhia das Letras, 2019), José Miguel Wisnik presents an online course to mark the celebration of Drummond Day 2020. More about Drummond Day: https://diadrummond.com.br In the three classes – richly illustrated with images and reproductions of poems – Wisnik presents the presence of Itabira in Drummond's poems and memoirs; he discusses the controversies that resulted in the creation of the Vale do Rio Doce Company and its consequent impact on the Cauê peak, which triggered Drummond's reaction in poems, chronicles, and journalistic intervention texts; the approach finally arrives at an examination of the poem "The Machine of the World". The classes combine various and heterogeneous elements, never limiting themselves to being a schematic verification of the correspondences between the poetic text and historical facts. Wisnik, however, observes the continued relevance of Drummond's harsh criticisms, as Itabira – but also Brazil and the world – confront the tragedies of Mariana and Brumadinho.
