The Real McGregor (2025 Restoration)
Ogun Records & International Media Productions Ltd present An International Media Productions film The Real McGregor (2025 Restoration) Director: Ian Hutchison (1967) Director: Paul D.J. Moody (2025) All rights reserved 2025 International Media Productions Ronnie Scott’s Old Place was a jazz club in the basement of 39 Gerrard Street in London’s Chinatown. It was the site of the original Ronnie Scott club and when Ronnie opened the new venue in Frith Street still had time to run on the lease. Ronnie and Pete King kept the club going as an outlet for the younger generation of British jazz musicians. From 1966 the club was run by impresario John Jack, operating 6-7 nights a week and available 24 hours a day to musicians as a hang, a rehearsal space, a social and a central London venue for the adventurous and new music they created. At the heart of this music were the Blue Notes - newly arrived from Apartheid South Africa - who were in the process of igniting the jazz music scene in London. This film represents the only visual record of the group playing in the 1960s, and is also incredibly rare footage of Ronnie’s legendary Old Place. This footage has been meticulously restored by film-maker and archivist Paul Moody, and the soundtrack restored at the RCA sound studio The Real McGregor (2025 Restoration) Directors: Ian Hutchison (1967) Paul DJ Moody (2025) Music Chris McGregor - piano Dudu Pukwana - alto saxophone Mongezi Feza - pocket trumpet Ronnie Beer - tenor saxophone Johnny Dyani - double bass Louis Moholo - drums Film Peter Amsden Bob Ferguson Ian Hutchison Nic & Penny Ralph Ken Weller Shot on Agfa Colour CK17 At the Old Place London W1 Copyright 1967 This film is dedicated to: The Blue Notes Ian Hutchison Penny Ralph Ken Weller John Jack Contributors: Joe Boyd Claude Deppa Mike Gavin Maxine McGregor Louis Moholo-Moholo Hazel Miller Evan Parker Restoration Producer & Editor: Paul DJ Moody (International Media Productions Ltd.)
