Mantrailing Spaniels - Building Focus in your Mantrailing Spaniel

Mantrailing with spaniels isn't as easy as following the dog and finding the trail layer. Spaniels are experts in multitasking and switching to what they find rewarding with ease. Often there is little or no behaviour change so it's hard to recognise. Working on focus outside of Mantrailing can help your mantrailing spaniel, (or spaniel cross) become a better trailer. Training the brain is important and without building in the focus, general life can be a bit mental with a spaniel. We have asked Aleksandra from Synchro Dog Training to talk to us about building focus in your mantrailing Spaniel through a variety of games and exercises. She specialises in training spaniels and helping spaniel owners get the best out of their life with these amazing little dogs. Mantrailing is one of the activities she uses in her work, to boost confidence, motivation and partnership with owners. Her current obsession is gundog training and fieldwork: the original spaniel job. Gundogs rely on their nose heavily in their work. One of the tasks of a retrieving dog is following a short trail of an injured animal. Hunting and flushing game, requires spaniels to work in a specific way, which is genetically programmed in them. This often shows on a trail and may work both to the trailing team's advantage and to their detriment. We are also excited for Aleksandra to introduce her new dog sport - Scurry Dog!
