In our next video, Bilach Jimale speaks to another important theme of the Global Gathering of Pastoralist Women (ICIMOD, Kathmandu, 26–29 May): 🐐 Economy, livelihoods and working conditions 🐪 At the Gathering, we will be asking: What specific challenges do pastoralist women face in their working conditions, access to markets, and wider livelihood strategies — and what forms of recognition and support are needed? Bilach raises several critical points, including: 👉 Gendered power dynamics that often limit women’s participation in economic decision-making; 👉 Unpaid domestic and care work that takes up much of women’s time and limits their access to markets, capacity-building opportunities and networking; 👉 Limited access to education and literacy opportunities, which can affect women’s ability to participate fully in markets, training, leadership spaces and different parts of pastoralist value chains.
