A lecture from a special humanities course for master's and doctoral students at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). For a philologist, the speech of a conversational partner is a museum of the country's antiquities and linguistic geography. Someone unfamiliar with the history of language won't immediately notice the differences in the dialects of different regions. How different are the pronunciations of Tula, Kursk, Orel, Belgorod, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Arkhangelsk. Yet, if our ears were more sensitive, we would hear striking differences. This time, we will focus on three "fossils" of Moscow pronunciation. Why do old ladies from the outskirts of Moscow, professors of philology departments, and People's Artists of the Maly Theater pronounce "pohozhdenie" (similar)?
