Het Duitse koloniale rijk begon aan het eind van de 19e eeuw, ook wel het tijdperk van het moderne imperialisme genoemd. Duitsland was wat dat betreft een laatkomer, want Duitsland werd in 1871 verenigd. Na de eenwording van Duitsland organiseerde Otto von Bismarck de Conferentie van Berlijn van 1884-85 die leidde tot de Scramble for Africa waar Europese naties het Afrikaanse continent verdeelden voor grootschalige kolonisatie. Duits Oost-Afrika en Zuidwest-Afrika (Deutsch-Südwestafrika) waren de twee grootste Duitse kolonies in Afrika. In Azië stichtten ze Duits Nieuw-Guinea en namen ze verschillende eilanden in de Stille Oceaan over. In Duits Zuidwest-Afrika pleegden de Duitsers de eerste volkerenmoord van de 20e eeuw op de Herero en Nama (1904 - 1908). Leer meer over het koloniale verleden van Duitsland in Afrika en Azië.
