Today we're revisiting Highgate Cemetery, but we're telling a different story. Highgate Cemetery is famous for vampires and ghost stories. But the real horror was never supernatural. In 1832, the British Parliament passed the Anatomy Act — a law that meant if you died poor, your body no longer belonged to you. It belonged to the surgeons. Before that law, body-snatchers called "resurrection men" worked London's graveyards at night, digging up fresh corpses to sell to medical schools. It was illegal, dangerous, and lucrative. Parliament's solution? Make it legal. If you were buried in a pauper's grave, you were state property. Highgate Cemetery was built in direct response to that crisis — part of London's Magnificent Seven, designed to handle a city drowning in its own dead. London's churchyards were so overcrowded that bodies were breaking through the earth. The stench was unbearable. What the Victorians built instead was extraordinary — Egyptian Revival architecture, catacombs, cedar of Lebanon, and a genuine obsession with what happened after death.
