I was quite surprised that he didn't know how to adjust a micrometer himself, even though he uses it quite often. I think many people have forgotten this knowledge, so let's refresh it. Check the micrometer's zero reading every time before starting work, and adjust if necessary. To do this, check the tightness of the micrometer's anvil and stem in the clamp. Wipe the measuring surfaces with a clean, soft cloth and check the instrument's zero reading. To do this, connect the working surfaces of the anvil and the micrometer screw together using a ratchet (3-5 clicks). If the instrument is set correctly, its reading will be 0.00. If not, as in our case, then tighten the locking screw. Then, holding the drum, loosen the drum mount and align the marks on the stem and drum to set the zero point. Then carefully tighten the drum mount. And the preliminary adjustment is complete. Why preliminary? Because I perform more precise adjustments using standards or other length gauge blocks. Take a gauge block; as you can see, the size it corresponds to is marked on the block. If the measured size matches, then the micrometer is set correctly; if not, it needs adjustment. I showed how to do this earlier. In our case, using standard standards showed that the classic "zero" setting is inaccurate and requires more precise adjustment. Which is what I did. What's the point of this discussion? It's important to understand that classic micrometer adjustments don't always produce clear and accurate results.
