Coenzyme Q, or Q10 for short, is a vitamin-like substance that is structurally related to vitamins E and K. In its function as a coenzyme, it supports various enzymes in the body in their respective functions and is therefore found in every cell in the body. What are enzymes again? Enzymes are complex protein molecules that accelerate chemical processes in our body. One of the functions of coenzyme Q10 is to support the energy production of every single cell. Therefore, the Q10 concentration is particularly high in organs that require the most energy, such as the heart, lungs, and liver. The coenzyme also scavenges oxygen compounds harmful to cells, so-called free radicals, and is therefore also considered an antioxidant. Because coenzyme Q10 plays such an important role in our body's cells and various organs, a wide variety of diseases are associated with a Q10 deficiency. What are the uses of coenzyme Q10? Have you ever skimmed through the effects of Q10 as a dietary supplement advertised by manufacturers? It's a bit like "making a wish." Advertising claims range from lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels to strengthening heart function and even improving overall performance. It's very important to emphasize that these health claims made by dietary supplement manufacturers are officially prohibited as advertising claims, as they are currently considered scientifically unproven. Supplementation with Q10 is therefore not considered necessary for healthy individuals, and symptoms of deficiency are unknown. 1. Coenzyme Q10 and cardiovascular diseases 2.
