MORBUS PER NOCTEM | Horror Short Film 4K

Subtitles available! Back in 2016, Morbus Per Noctem was the project that earned us the most awards on the festival circuit. Best Directors, Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Special Effects were among the honors the film received. After all these years, we felt it was finally time to share it with everyone on YouTube. "Julien, a young police officer, has changed. Since the night 'it' happened, he has never been the same. Something dark is consuming him, isolating him more and more from the rest of the world." Morbus Per Noctem is a loose adaptation of Bernard Bultez's short story Jusqu'au bout de la nuit (Until the End of the Night). The project began in 2014 when producer Rémy Fleury approached us about adapting the story. Rather than creating a faithful adaptation, we wanted to tell a more personal story inspired by its themes and mythology. With Morbus Per Noctem, we revisited one of horror cinema's most iconic myths from a different perspective. Instead of focusing on the monster, we were interested in the man behind it. The film explores the slow downfall of someone consumed by an addiction he cannot control, examining loneliness, self-destruction and the compromises that come with losing oneself. Julien's addiction slowly erodes the boundaries he once believed were unbreakable. It pushes him away from those around him and transforms him into someone he no longer recognizes. The film was also conceived as a love letter to the genre movies that inspired us growing up. We embraced practical filmmaking, relying on handmade special effects and old-school techniques whenever possible, paying tribute to the horror films of the 1980s. The entire production was shot over four nights. For a young team working with limited resources, every shoot was a challenge. What followed were countless hours of editing to refine the pacing, strengthen the story and keep the runtime under fifteen minutes, allowing the film to remain accessible to international festivals. The effort paid off. The film enjoyed a successful festival run, won numerous awards and helped us take our first real steps as filmmakers. Looking back, Morbus Per Noctem represents a special moment in our lives. We were barely adults when we made it, armed with more enthusiasm than resources and determined to bring our ideas to life. In many ways, the film became a collective adventure involving family, friends and volunteers who generously contributed their time and talent. One of our most memorable experiences came during post-production. By pure chance, we found the email address of Damien Boisseau, the French voice of Matt Damon. We sent him the screenplay hoping he might read it. To our amazement, he not only read it but also agreed to lend his voice to the character of Julien. Even today, it still feels surreal. Twelve years later, we remain deeply attached to this project. It taught us invaluable lessons about storytelling, filmmaking and perseverance. Like many first films, it carries all the ambitions and imperfections of the people who made it, and that's exactly why it remains so important to us. We would like to thank every member of the cast and crew, as well as everyone who contributed to the project. Without them, this film would never have existed. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life. If you watch the film, feel free to leave a comment and let us know what you think. And if you enjoyed it, don't hesitate to share it. Independent films find their audience through word of mouth, and every share helps. Thank you for watching!
