Mon bac français en poche - Dom Juan de Molière

A play to see or read for inclusion in the "theater and comedy" section of the French Baccalaureate literature course. To write Dom Juan in 1665, Molière drew inspiration from a play written by a Spanish monk, Tirso de Molina, thirty-five years earlier. But the character of Dom Juan caused a scandal! This seducer, who rejects social norms, displays a certain free spirit, but he is also a liar and an unbeliever, always prone to excess. Even though the play gives the impression of criticizing libertine love, Molière is actually attacking hypocritical hypocrites. To do this, he uses the Baroque style, which allows for eccentricities and a mixing of genres: the characters come from different social classes, the tone is both mocking and serious, and the play's ending is downright fantastical! But right after its first performances, the play was censored. It would be almost two centuries before the uncensored version was performed again. Since then, the play has been a real success and has been revived and adapted many times.
