Residents of Nyamebɛkyere React to Proposed ECOWAS Road Project from Apimanim to Elubo west-region
Nyamebɛkyere, Western Region – Residents of Nyamebɛkyere have expressed mixed reactions following reports that the Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is moving forward with plans to improve and expand the road corridor linking Apimanim, Elubo, and neighboring Côte d’Ivoire. The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regional transportation networks, improve cross-border trade, and enhance economic integration within West Africa. The road corridor is connected to the larger Abidjan–Lagos transport initiative being coordinated by ECOWAS. (trade.gov) While many residents acknowledge the importance of the project for economic growth, some people in Nyamebɛkyere say they are concerned that their community’s road conditions have not received the attention they deserve. Speaking to this reporter, several residents noted that although major roads connecting international borders are being prioritized, local roads serving farming communities remain in poor condition, making transportation difficult, especially during the rainy season. “We are happy that development is coming to the area, but we also want the authorities to remember communities like Nyamebɛkyere. Our roads become almost impassable when it rains,” one resident said. Others believe the project will create business opportunities, reduce travel time, and improve access to markets for farmers and traders. They expressed hope that local communities along the route will benefit directly from the development. Community leaders have also called on government officials and project authorities to engage residents regularly and address concerns related to compensation, land acquisition, and environmental impacts before construction begins. Similar concerns about compensation for affected landowners have been raised in other sections of the corridor project. (Ghana News Agency) Residents say they support development but want assurances that the needs of local communities will not be overlooked as regional infrastructure projects move forward. For now, people in Nyamebɛkyere remain hopeful that the road project will bring economic benefits while also addressing long-standing challenges facing communities along the corridor.
