These animals are predominantly sick due to the presence of pseudo-nitzschia blooms (toxic algae blooms) off our coast. This algae produces a neurotoxin called domoic acid, which accumulates in fish such as sardines, anchovies, and squid. The toxin then affects predators like sea lions and dolphins, causing seizures, brain damage, and, in some cases, death.
