Exodus 16 Explained | Manna from Heaven: God’s Daily Provision in the Wilderness Exodus 16 reveals one of the most miraculous and faith-shaping moments in Israel’s journey — when God fed His people with bread from heaven. After leaving Elim, the Israelites entered the desert of Sin and began to grumble against Moses and Aaron. They longed for the food of Egypt, forgetting that they had been slaves there. But in mercy, God promised to provide for them. The Lord said, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to gather only what they need. In this way, I will test them to see whether they will follow My instructions.” That evening, quail covered the camp. And in the morning, thin flakes like frost appeared on the ground. The people said, “What is it?” — and Moses replied, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.” They called it *manna*. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. Each was to gather only what they needed. Those who gathered much did not have too much, and those who gathered little did not have too little. God was teaching His people daily dependence — not on stored food, but on His faithfulness. On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much, for the seventh day — the Sabbath — was a day of rest. The manna came for forty years, sustaining Israel until they reached the border of the Promised Land. Exodus 16 teaches us that God’s provision is constant, but it also requires trust.
