Sumerian-Mesopotamian Magic: Where Written Magic Began

Before grimoires, before spell books, before modern witchcraft had a name, there were clay tablets. Ancient Mesopotamian magic was written in cuneiform and preserved through Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian traditions. It was not separate from religion, healing, law, or daily life. Magic was a formal system of divine knowledge, ritual action, sacred speech, and protection. At its center stands Enki — later called Ea — god of wisdom, freshwater, magic, healing, craft, and exorcism. His sacred city was Eridu, and his domain was the Apsu: the deep freshwater abyss beneath the earth. Enki was not the storm god; that role belongs to Enlil. Enki is the keeper of hidden knowledge, ritual purification, sacred words, and the power to restore order when something unseen has gone wrong. The trained ritual specialist was called an āšipu: an exorcist, healer, diviner, and keeper of ritual knowledge. The āšipu used spoken incantations, figurines, water, fire, oils, plants, offerings, and clay tablets to identify and remove curses, hostile spirits, illness, bad omens, broken taboos, and spiritual pollution. Two major ritual collections survive from this world: Maqlû — “Burning.” A series of anti-witchcraft rites where an effigy of the harmful witch or curse was symbolically destroyed by fire. Šurpu — “Burning” or “purification.” Ritual texts used to strip away guilt, taboo, curse-effects, and spiritual contamination. The cosmic foundation of this tradition is the **ME**: divine decrees that govern civilization, power, ritual, kingship, craft, and sacred order. The ME were not moral rules like modern religious commandments. They were the underlying powers that make reality function. Enki was their keeper. Other forces named in this tradition include: Nammu — the primordial sea before creation, the womb of existence. An — the vast sky and highest divine authority. Enlil — air, wind, storms, command, and divine authority. Ereshkigal — Queen of the Underworld; ruler of the dead and the irreversible laws of descent. Utu — sun, truth, justice, and the all-seeing witness. Inanna— love, war, sovereignty, desire, power, and transformation. Nusku— sacred fire, light, and the ritual flame. This song is not about a modern “Law of Three.” That does not belong to ancient Mesopotamian magic. It is about an older idea: sacred order, consequences, divine boundaries, ritual knowledge, and the dangerous responsibility of speaking power into the world. The clay may crumble.
