HISTORY OF THE SASSAGOULA RIVER AND RIVER CRUISE The Sassagoula River is a Disney-created waterway designed as part of the development of the Port Orleans Resort area. The approximately 2½-mile river connected the original Disney’s Port Orleans Resort with Disney Village Marketplace, the shopping and dining destination now known as Disney Springs. Disney’s Port Orleans Resort originally opened in 1991 and is now known as Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter. The nearby Dixie Landings Resort opened in 1992 and was later renamed Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside when the two resort areas were combined under the Port Orleans name in 2001. The Sassagoula River became an important part of the atmosphere and transportation system connecting the Port Orleans resorts with Disney Village Marketplace, the shopping and dining destination now known as Disney Springs. In 1997, Disney Village Marketplace became part of Downtown Disney, which was later transformed into Disney Springs in 2015. The river’s winding route, Southern-inspired scenery, and riverboat transportation help extend the Louisiana and Mississippi River themes found throughout Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside and Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter. The current Sassagoula River Cruise fleet was introduced in 2004 and includes approximately 15 yellow-and-blue ferryboats with Southern-inspired names such as Louisiana Lady, Memphis Miss, Bayou Princess, Magnolia Blossom, Sassagoula Sunset, Jazz Lady, Delta Lady, and Crescent City Queen. Today, the Sassagoula River Cruise continues to serve as both complimentary Walt Disney World transportation and a relaxing scenic experience for guests traveling between select Disney Resort hotels and Disney Springs.
