Finishing a house basement. How to finish a house basement. As we all know, a basement is the above-ground part of a foundation, made of concrete or red brick. In this form, a basement is, at the very least, unsightly. Therefore, brick and concrete require finishing. Build a house with trust! We build houses from brick and aerated concrete! 1. Plastering The easiest and cheapest way to finish a basement is to plaster it and paint it a suitable color. Almost anyone can do this job, but it's important to keep one thing in mind. To prevent the plaster from coming into contact with damp soil, becoming damp, and peeling off in chunks, dig a small trench around the perimeter of the walls and fill it with crushed stone. Alternatively, create a blind area around the house. 2. Natural stone Plaster would be ideal, if not for one problem. It doesn't last long. After two or three years, the finishing layer will inevitably crack and require, at best, renovation, and at worst, complete replacement. Therefore, many choose a more expensive but also more durable finish for the baseboard, such as natural stone cladding. If done correctly, it will last as long as the baseboard itself. However, this type of finish also has its drawbacks. First and foremost is the high price. Even tiles made from simple, common minerals are expensive, and elite varieties are incredibly expensive. Furthermore, stone tiles are difficult to work with and require the help of qualified craftsmen. The cladding material is quite heavy and requires the use of high-strength, expensive adhesives. But those who appreciate the beauty and durability of natural materials are not deterred by these drawbacks. It is advisable to treat a baseboard covered with stone tiles with a water-repellent agent once or twice a year. This prevents the formation of efflorescence, moss, and mold. When choosing stone finishes, it's crucial to choose the right type. It should be a durable, non-porous, frost-resistant mineral, such as granite and sandstone. However, loose varieties such as limestone, shell rock, and marble should be avoided. There's another important point. Oddly enough, stones can clash with each other. Silicate and carbonate rocks should not be used in finishing. Undesirable chemical reactions will occur at the points where the "conflicting" tiles meet, leading to their destruction. 3. Artificial Stone For those who don't want to deal with expensive and difficult-to-work natural stone cladding, the market offers a worthy alternative. We're talking about artificial stone. This material is a mixture of Portland cement, sand, pigments, lightweight fillers, and other additives that mimics natural stone, as well as facing and clinker bricks. Moreover, the imitation is so accurate that only a specialist can distinguish the copy from the original. But the advantages don't end there. Artificial stone is extremely easy to work with. You don't need highly skilled craftsmen for tiling; a simple tiler will do. The key is to not skimp on adhesive. A moisture- and frost-resistant mixture capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of our climate is essential. Artificial stone itself is surprisingly weather-resistant. It can withstand 100-150 freeze-thaw cycles. Therefore, one can conclude that the tile has an enormous margin of safety. Within a single artificial stone collection, several sizes are typically produced, as well as corner, arched, and other elements. 4. Clinker Another option for finishing a plinth is clinker. This tile is made from a mixture of special highly plastic clays that are purified of impurities, extruded, and fired at high temperatures. The result is an exceptionally dense, wear-resistant, non-porous material with low water absorption. Clinker can withstand up to 300 freeze-thaw cycles, does not fade in the sun, and does not weather over the years. Its surface is resistant to efflorescence, fungus, and mold. It comes in over 100 color variations, from rich red to neutral white. Another advantage of clinker is the variety of additional elements. For example, corners (both external and internal) greatly simplify the work. When finishing a plinth with clinker, it is essential to use a high-quality flexible adhesive. It is not cheap, but skimping on this can lead to much higher costs later on repairs. The grout must be water- and frost-resistant. It is important that the adhesive layer does not exceed 1 cm in thickness, otherwise the mixture will lose its properties. After a couple of years, it will crack from the inside, and the expensive tiles will simply crumble. Before securing the tile to the base with adhesive, it must be dipped in water. Otherwise, it will absorb moisture from the mortar, depriving it of its binding agent.
