Giant Space Spiders and Toxic Femininity | Sting (2024)

Sting (2024) might seem like a simple little bit of horror camp featuring a giant space spider, but beneath it's surface, there's something a lot scarier going on with the family at the center of story. Charlotte is just a young preteen, but she's about to learn the hard way about female toxicity, the only question is whether she'll be able to address her own in time to save her family. While recent years have seen a spike in discussion of toxic masculinity, observers may have noticed that there is very little mention of it's opposite: toxic femininity. Discourse around this subject is heavily suppressed, but I find the issue to be extremely interesting. One of my favorite things about horror movies is how they enable discussions about society and morality, and Sting serves this purpose well. Over the course of this video, I'll also take a look at some recent events to see how they too illustrate the culture of toxic femininity.
