Planetary Boundary Keynotes - UN World Oceans Day 2024
Two high-level keynotes delving into the role of the ocean within earth’s broader ecosystems, and demonstrating how humanity’s treatment of the ocean has impacted the planet’s equilibrium as a whole. The presentations will challenge the notion that the ocean is limitless, underscore the tangible realities of the boundaries that have been breached, and speak to the level of change needed to restore balance. Featuring Johan Rockström (Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), and Naoko Ishii (Professor at The University of Tokyo | Director, Center for Global Commons | Former CEO and Chairperson, Global Environment Facility). We don’t have time for “out of sight, out of mind.” Our relationship to the ocean needs to urgently change, and our efforts have only skimmed the surface to date. To motivate widespread momentum for the ocean, we need to awaken new depths. UN WOD 2024 took us on a journey of discovery through the ocean’s vastness, tapping into the wisdom and expertise of global policy-makers, scientists, thought leaders, and artists to expand our perspectives and appreciation for our blue planet, build new foundations for our relationship to the ocean, and ignite a wave of action towards necessary change. UN World Oceans Day 2024 is hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UN DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs in partnership with Oceanic Global. *While the official UN designation for World Oceans Day is 8 June, the 2024 event will be celebrated on Friday, 7 June.
