As the world rang in the New Year, millions welcomed 2026 with spectacular fireworks displays. In Enugu State, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi defected to the African Democratic Congress during a special event organised by Southeast stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar welcomed Peter Obi's decision to join ADC, describing the step as critical to challenge power and an opportunity to deliver good governance to Nigerians. In Umuahia, Abia State Governor Alex Otti said he would not be leaving the Labour Party, reiterating that he joined the party before Peter Obi did. In another development from Bauchi, the State Governor Bala Mohammed accused the federal government of using institutions to intimidate him for refusing to defect to the APC.
