Brewster County Inmates Forced to Wear Hot Pink Uniforms

BREWSTER COUNTY - If orange is the new black, then I guess you could say pink is the new orange at the Brewster County Jail. The jail is trying something a little different to make sure inmates don’t go unnoticed outside of their walls. The jail has ditched their black and white pinstripe uniforms for solid hot pink ones. Locked up in the Brewster County Jail, inmates won’t find themselves wearing orange, or the classic black and white pinstripes, instead they’ll be clothed in all pink. “We’re governed by jail standards and one of the things they don’t govern is the uniform color,” said Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson. The decision goes back almost ten years to when one of Sheriff Ronny Dodson’s inmates made a run for it. “As an experience sheriff of an escapee, I want all the advantage we can get,” said Dodson. Dodson says the old black and white uniforms would actually blend into the West Texas landscape. However, wearing pink, you can’t really miss it. “If someone would have saw someone running around in a bright pink uniform, I’m sure they would have called us,” said Dodson. And for having inmates wear them for the last six weeks, it’s been a surprisingly positive change. Sheriff Dodson says he hasn’t had a single complaint about the color from the inmates. “Pink is a soothing color, and some of the guys in here are big guys and they think it enhances their muscles,” said Dodson. So now, motorists have a new color to watch out for when inmates are cleaning up trash, and that color is hot pink, one you definitely won’t overlook.
